There are two main treatments for type 1 Gaucher disease:
Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) – A treatment where a medicine is given by infusion (through a drip into your blood stream). This medicine works by replacing the missing enzyme people with type 1 Gaucher disease need
Substrate reduction therapy (SRT) – A medicine you take by mouth. It helps stop your body making too much of a fatty substance called glucocerebroside
ERT is approved for children with type 1 Gaucher disease. Teenagers and adults may get either ERT or SRT. Your doctor will help you decide which treatment is best for you.
If you have type 1 Gaucher disease, know that it can worsen over time – even if you are well. Talk to your doctor about any concerns or questions you may have. Attend all of your check-ups for tests and scans.
